”For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, KJV
Jesus is the Son of God.
But there is more to this fact.
What do I mean by this?
Here’s how the Gospel of John begins:
”1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
John 1:1-12, KJV
Pay attention to what is being said:
”He was in the world,”
”and the world was made by him,”
The world was made by him.
It is quite a significant statement.
There are more verses that prove the same point
First we have this verse from John chapter 8:
”Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”
John 8:58, KJV
I am is one of the names attributed to God in the Bible.
“14 And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.
15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.”
Exodus 3:14-15, KJV
Other than this, Jesus is also making the point that he was there before Abraham was.
And then this verse from John chapter 10:
”I and the Father are one.”
John 10:30, KJV
Jesus and the Father are one.
Separate, yet not.
Similar message continues in Colossians:
”12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.”
Colossians 1:12-20, KJV
Let’s repeat what we just heard:
”Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:”
”For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible,”
What a sublime statement is being made!
Simply magnificent.
But we are not yet done.
Toward the end of the book (or gospel) of John we have one of his disciples calling Jesus God.
Here is the relevant quote:
“24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”
John 20:24-29, KJV
The Bible is quite clear on the issue.
We haven’t gone through every verse that points to the fact who Jesus actually is, but I’d say the message is consistent and clear enough that anyone should be able to piece the puzzle together by now.
And with all that being said, we’ll close this chapter.
Praise the Lord.
